Start the Morning Energized

Before getting out of bed in the morning, use your breath and your feet to bring in energy to awaken your mind and body. Lying flat on your back with legs about shoulder-width apart and your heels gently planted on the bed, bring the tops of your feet together, then away from each other as far to each side as comfortable (heels remain in the same place) – as though they are windshield wipers moving slowly back and forth. As you do this for one or two minutes, take slow, deep breaths allowing your abdominal muscles to relax and expand with each cycle of inhale/exhale. Resist the temptation of your mind to start planning the day – let your focus be on your breath and on the gently back and forth movement of your feet. When you are finished, lie still for another minute or two and see if you can notice yourself feeling a bit more energized. You may need to do this over a period of several days to sense the gentle surge of energy this practice can provide.
